3rd.October 1938 - 17th.April
1960.
Born Oklahoma City.
Singer
Started singing career as a hillbilly singer but after meeting songwriter Jerry
Capehart in 1956 reverted to Rock N Roll. Signed for Crest Records of Los
Angeles, but after his first release failed signed for Liberty Records. His
appearance in the "Girl Can't Help It" movie helped his first Liberty
single "Sittin' In The Balcony" become a hit. Eddie's next release
"Summertime Blues" turned him into a major star and nationwide tours
established Eddie's as a dynamic stage performer. Began a British tour in early
1960 with Gene Vincent and his popularity increased with appearances on TV's
shows. It was during this tour that Eddie decided on a brief return to Los
Angeles. Whilst on the way to the airport his Ford Consul taxi blew a tyre at
Rowden Hill, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England then crashed into a lamp post.
He was taken to St. Martins Hospital, Bath where he was pronounced dead at the
age of 22. A permanent memorial stone can be found at the scene of the crash. Gene Vincent was also a passenger in the car but survived. Eddie's
then new record was the aptly named single "Three Steps to
Heaven" which went straight to No1. Although Eddie only enjoyed a short
career his music lives on and over the years his songs have become Rock N Roll
classics.
