Elvis Aaron Presley
(The King)
8th January 1935 - 16th August 1977
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi ( his birthplace, see picture
above, is open to the public). The Presley family being a poor family
living in a wooden shack in perhaps the poorest area of Tupelo. His father
Vernon moved the family to Memphis which enabled him to find work and improve
the families circumstances. Despite his poor upbringings Elvis's mother Gladys
ensured Elvis did not turn to a life of crime and Elvis left school to become a
truck driver. His decision to make a record for his
mothers birthday ( at the Sun studios in Memphis) was to change his life and popularize
Rock N Roll for ever. It was his recordings with Sam Phillips at the Sun
Studios, that started and gave Rock N Roll to the World. Elvis lead the way for
other white performers to sing and perform what was then called black peoples
music. His appearances in public and then on TV drew enormous audiences, and
much controversy. His then nickname of "Elvis the Pelvis" was
gained by what the then establishment called " His obscene
movements". Although banned from being filmed from the waist down on
TV, because of his movements, by the mid 50's Elvis had become the most popular
singer in America. Elvis Presley was now "The King" of Rock N Roll and
could not lead a normal life. Mobbed whenever he appeared in public, he
surrounded himself with family and a close circle of friends. He purchased
"Graceland", then an isolated mansion on the outskirts of Memphis, to
escape all this public attention sadly Elvis Presley would never lead a normal
life again. Elvis became a legend in his own lifetime, he went on to make 35
feature films, become the highest selling record artist in history and break all
attendance records in Las Vegas. Elvis Presley's home "Graceland" in Memphis is now open to the public
and has become a place of pilgrimage for his fans. There are 3 special occasions celebrated every year at Graceland these are:- Christmas
- Elvis's original lights and decorations are in place on the front &
inside Graceland from Thanksgiving to 8th January. Elvis's Birthday - Around
8th January there are activities and events to commemorate Elvis's birth. Elvis
Week - In August there is a full week of special events leading up to the
annual candlelight vigil on 15th August to remember the day Elvis died 16th
August 1977. Elvis was moved from his original plot at the local
cemetery, together with his mother and her original headstone ( large angel see picture above),
after his tomb was tampered with. Elvis is now buried in
the Meditation Garden, in the grounds of Graceland in Memphis.
