Born Chicago, Illinois
Originally a member of  Soul Stirrers gospel group he turned to Soul in the late 50's. First solo hit "You Send Me" was followed by "Only Sixteen" - "Wonderful World" - "Cupid" all present day classics. Started his own label Sar in 1960 and the hits continued until his untimely death in December 1964. He was shot to death by the manager of  the  Hacienda Motel ( now called The Star Motel) 9137 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles after an argument. Later the courts ruled the shooting a justifiable homicide.  Sam Cooke is still considered the ultimate soul singer nearly 40 years after his death and his material has since been recorded by such artists as Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Rod Stewart & countless others.
